Major Marathons in Korea
is a most popular and best marathon in Korea. It is also known as DongA marathon which is their old name. They normally hodl the race at 08:00 a.m. on the third Sunday of March. It is 81st anniversary in 2010. They also offer informatin in English and in Japanese. They obtained a gold label from International Amatueur Athletic Federation (IAAF) in 2010. The first race was 23.2Km in Seoul on 21st March 1931. Unfortunately, they couldn't hold the race from 1941 to 1953 due to the Japanese goverment and the Korean war. They changed the race title to DongA marathon when they held first full course marathon (42.195Km = 26.2 miles) on 29th April 1964. They invited foreign runners from Canada, Japan and other countries ever and upgraded the race as an international marathon. is a second oldest and most scenic marathon in Korea. The race start is located near Uiamho (lake) in Chuncheon city which is about 100Km away from Seoul to east. The race starts at 10:00 a.m. on the third Sunday of October and most part of the course is along Uiamho. Participants are generally 20,000 people and the entry fee is 40,000Won (around $36USD). There is only marathon course as well as only 18 and older people is allowed to participte. The registration starts from April and closes in July. It takes about 1h 50 min to get to Chuncheon from Dong-Seoul bus terminal (east side of Seoul) by bus or from Chungryangri train station by train. The marathon organizer also arrange marathon bus and it is required to have a reservation. The bus fare is 10,000won for a round trip between Seoul and Chuncheon. The marathon starts at a main road of Olympic stadium at 08:20 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. The weather is normally good to race and the course is mostly flat. There are a few hills but they are long and graduately increasing; 18m ~ 26m high from a level of the start. The entry fee is 40,000Won ($36 USD) for a marathon and 10Km. The finish line is in the Olympic stadium. Top 10 male finishers of elites were between 2:08 and 2:16 through the years.
